Special thanks to Amy Frye (decorating partner/friend extraordinaire!), Amy's mom DD Salyards (for the gorgeous handmade tree skirt), Lisa Cochran (for the stunning fresh water pearl bracelet), and artist Rose Bryant (for her beautiful "tiny painting" of a boat--perfect for our tree!). Thank you to Kari, for once again creating the perfect ornament to match our theme (we loved the Womenade sailboats!). And thank you to Mary, for delivering Womenade brochures for us in the nick of time!

Festival of Trees |
|
The Festival of Trees is a10-year old tradition in Exeter and is an important fundraiser for the Exeter Chamber of Commerce’s Children’s Fund , which provides vouchers to families in need in Exeter and surrounding communities to purchase winter clothing and bedding. Many local businesses and non-profit agencies purchase a tree donated to the fund by area farms. The tree is then decoratied to attract bidders at the silent auction.
Lena Natola thought Womenade of Greater Squamscott ought to be represented at the Festival of Trees since the missions are similar: provide vital assistance to our local neighbors in need.
Lena purchased the tree on behalf of Womenade, and together with friends Amy Frye and Lisa Cochran, bought trimmings over the course of the year. Lena and Amy decorated the tree.
Lisa generously donated 7 pairs of her Lily Design “Pieces of Inspiration” earrings, (a line of earrings she created from which she donates a percentage of profits to Womenade on an ongoing basis Click here for more info). |
|
Kari Lazerowich, graphic designer Womenade's graphic designer, donated two card stock ornaments. Walmart in Epping, donated brushed metallic green ornaments and a 12-foot artificial tree, which was donated to a local church.
In keeping with the grassroots “women helping their neighbors” theme of Womenade, the tree was decorated
in a simple, organic style, which included faux lemon ornaments (“when life hands you lemons, there’s Womenade”), natural pine cones, brushed metallic green
(in Womenade’s trademark shade) and red ornaments, two styles of card stock ornaments featuring lemon slices and
a version of the Womenade deer logo decked out with a red Rudolph nose, gilded bronze leaf garland, a sequined
green tree star, white lights, and woodsy tree skirt.
In addition to the earrings, the winning bidder also received a $20 gift certificate to Divine Café and Grille in Exeter donated by Amy Frye and a basket of brown and pink Womenade of Greater Squamscott t-shirts and Womenade brochures.
The Womenade tree sold for over $300! |
Lena Natola, Amy Frye and Lisa Cochran banded together to decorate a tree on behalf of Womenade of the Greater Seacoast. Their efforts supported another local charity, The Children's Chamber Fund, whose goal is the same as Womenade's: to help those in need, in particular, children. In addition to receiving a beautifully-decorated tree, the winner bidder also received, Womenade
T-shirts in pink and brown, 7 pairs of Pieces of Inspiration earrings and a $20 gift certificate to Divine Café and Grille in Exeter. With the help of Lena, Amy and Lisa, as well as other businesses and community groups, The Children's Chamber Fund raised over $20,000 at the annual event. |

Monday, February 11: A magical night of music with folk |
Random Acts of Harmony (myspace.com/randomactsofharmony) and Cordwood (myspace.com/cordwood) joined together to present a benefit concert for Womenade of Greater Squamscott on Saturday, March 29 at 7 p.m at the First Unitarian Universalist Society, 12 Elm St., Exeter.
Bob Moore and Neil Zweig opened the show. Bob is well known in the Seacoast as a long-time poet and singer-song writer and Neil is a master guitarist who backs-up numerous New England singer-songwriters.
The acoustic folk trio, Random Acts of Harmony followed featuring crisp, tight three-part harmonies. Along with traditional American and British
Isles folk songs, they covered the music of John Prine, Steve Goodman,
Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Bill Staines, Tom Paxton and many others.
Audiences were treated to an idyllic walk down memory lane withthe heartfelt and often humorous tunes of Cordwood, an acoustic, country folk and bluegrass band out of Northwood. All four band members treated the audience to wonderful stories, original pieces, and superb instrumentals.
The evening was so magically musical, raising $1,003 for Womenade
that we hope to make this an annual event. Thank you, Donna Schlachman,
Bob Moore, Neil Zweig, Random Acts of Harmony and Cordwood! |

DECEMBER |
Thanks to Sole Sistahs who raised $4,000 for WOGS! |
Like the Womenade organization itself, friendship translated into helping neighbors. A local group
of runners, the Sole Sistahs,
donated almost $4,000 to Womenade of the Greater Seacoast in December. Many of the Sole Sistahs team members were struck by the positive and encouraging friendships that
had been forged through running.
They decided to organize an all women's Reach the Beach Relay team, and at the same time raise money for Womenade, because
they wanted to do something in
their community they all felt
strongly about. |
|
Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Exeter Hospital, all 14 Sole Sistahs were able to donate their entry fees for the annual event. Some of the team members also raised additional
funds by sending out letters and getting individual sponsors, with
Helene-Marie Collins leading the way. The finally tally on this effort was more than $3,900! "The experience was rewarding and supportive on so many levels," Sole Sistah Emily Kerr wrote in an e-mail that it was
a
great example of how groups and individuals
can pull together
to make a difference in
their communities. |
